Greer, a leading developer and provider of allergy immunotherapy products, recently completed a multi-center Phase IIb clinical trial using its standardized timothy grass pollen allergenic extract in the United States. The parallel, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial for sublingual-oral immunotherapy (SLIT) in adults was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of SLIT in patients with rhinoconjunctivitis caused by timothy grass pollen. The trial enrolled 87 subjects in a study estimated to require 140 subjects.
Measurements showed that grass pollen levels at most of the clinical sites did not reach the high concentrations that are usually needed to induce clinically relevant allergy symptoms. Accordingly, the mean allergy symptom scores and anti-allergy medication use reported by subjects in both the actively-treated and placebo groups did not show significant increases during the grass pollen season.
For this reason, the primary efficacy endpoint was not achieved. However, preliminary immunological marker analyses did show responses consistent with previously reported treatment effects indicating an immune response in participants actively treated with SLIT.
